Sexy Voices

What did you imagine when you read this blog title?  Were you thinking of anyone in particular

  • Brian Blessed?
  • Judy Dench?
  • Your partner?

We know that ‘Sex Sells’ but to what extent does the sound of your voice influence others?

Let’s look at some scientific research in the field of psycholinguistics.

Some qualities of voice are naturally attractive and some are not.

What we DON’T like

  • Nasality – the effect we hear when sounds go down the nose. Certain UK accents fall into this category.
  • An inappropriately high pitch (in both men and women).  In men we find this confusing and it is hard for a man to be a leader with this voice.  In women this voice can be appealing (i.e. Marilyn Monroe’s breathy tones in ‘Some Like it Hot’) but not, I think, in the workplace.  Women, like men, lose gravitas with this type of voice.

What we DO like

  • A rich resonant voice.  This involves using the amplifying cavities in the head by pushing the voice forward on the breath.
  • Lower pitches in both men and women.

It is interesting that in order to make herself acceptable as a potential first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher had a considerable amount of coaching to lower her pitch and control her pace.

So my thought for the month is HOW ARE YOU INFLUENCNG YOUR STAFF, TEAMS or CUSTOMERS?
Remember that your voice and the voices of your staff directly affect how others feel about your business.
Get it right and I can GUARANTEE you will receive more POSITIVE RESPONSES and that has to be GOOD FOR BUSINESS
